GroundGuard

Ground reinforcement grid for gravel and grass surfaces

Support: The rigid interlocking cells transfer the weight of traffic direct to the sub-base beneath, protecting grass and stabilising gravel. This reduces wear strips, rutting, uneven surfaces and gravel scattering beyond where it is laid.

Permeable: The open structure of the cells (90% of surface area is porous) allows rainwater to pass through to the absorbent soil below, replenishing groundwater and reducing rainwater runoff into the sewerage system.

Access: The cells lock the gravel in place, preventing scatter beyond where it is laid and aiding access for pedestrians, prams, wheelchairs, wheelbarrows, bikes and domestic vehicles.

ACO GroundGuard makes grass and gravel easier and safer to move across and allows rainwater to permeate into the ground where it lands, while allowing the elegance of lawn or gravel to shine through.

ACO GroundGuard grants access for all

The dimensions of ACO GroundGuard's cells and their close-knit structure ensures when trafficked by a walking stick ferrule or cycle wheel, the surface remains smooth and undisturbed. The tiles can be easily cut to abut to an adjoining surface, ensuring an easy access from one surface to another. Therefore ACO GroundGuard is suitable for use in Building Regulations Part M compliant installations in England and Wales and Building Standards Section 4 compliant installations in Scotland

ACO GroundGuard delivers eco-parking for the Eco Hub

The Eco Hub is a community and business centre for the village of Gamlingay in Cambridgeshire. The centre was opened in 2012 and is built and run on environmentally sustainable and economical principles. The building’s heat is generated from a ground source pump, electricity from photovoltaic cells on the roof and toilets are flushed with harvested rainwater.

This eco-approach extends to the Eco Hub’s parking around the facility. Over 40 parking spaces were created using 648m² of ACO GroundGuard. This further strengthened the Hub’s eco-commitment:

  • ACO GroundGuard is made from 100% recycled polyethylene and so added to the Hub's commitment to use recycled building materials where possible
  • ACO GroundGuard is over 90% porous, allowing the rainwater to drain directly into the ground, rather than into a stormwater drain, thus reducing pressure on the sewerage system.
  • ACO GroundGuard is filled with locally sourced gravel, reducing the carbon footprint of the installation further.

Best practice for installing ground reinforcement tiles

ACO asked experienced landscaper Rupert Keys for his expert advice on installing ground reinforcement grids. With more than thirty years’ experience, 60 show gardens and the TASK Training Academy to his name, Rupert shares his knowledge, revealing that what goes beneath the grid is as significant as the grid itself to deliver a stable and permeable solution.

With thanks to Pro Landscaper Magazine and Rupert for permission to use this article from June 2024 edition of the magazine.
